Remembering Dad(zhangping)
Childhood Memories:
1. Dad travels a lot. There is not a single place in China where Dad has not been to, at least that was my impression at the time. I always hoped that I could do the same when I grow up.
2. We had a LOT of Russian books in our house. To this date, I still could not pronounce a single Russian word. Back then, I figure Dad must be extremely smart.
3. Dad brings home stuff, whole bags of fruits, music notes from Shanghai, etc. For me, that was always something to look forward to. The funny thing is that Dad seems to lose a hat on every other trip.
4. The most impressive moment I can remember is when Dad came pick me up from 新桥, almost feels like being liberated. I was finally going home after staying with my grand father for a year. On the way back, we stopped at 薪庄,杭州,上海,大连, all the way to 杨屯。For a 10yr old boy, it felt like quite an adventure. But very soon, reality sets in.
5. I remember a period of time when I was sick very often. Every time I got a fever, Dad would carry me on bicycle to the hospital to get shots. It was painful.
Youth:
1. Always heard that Dad was a great teacher and I did not know what it means until 1978, when Dad was giving us lectures on trigometry in preparation for college entrance exam. He was so excited, so eager, so devoted. The whole building must have heard it.
I thought the neighbors must be jealous.
2. In October, 1978. Dad traveled with me all the way 合肥 to send me to college. It was more than 1600km away and took more than 20hrs. A lot of kids would be anxious leaving home for the first time. I was not worried at all because Dad was with me.
3. One summer, Dad suddenly announced we would all get a Shanghai Watch,
because he's got royalty payment from the publishing company for those Russian books he translated years ago. It was a luxury item back then.
4. Even after college, when I was in Beijing, dad would still come over and show me a trick or two. One time we went out to buy a portable cassette player. Just before we were ready to pay, Dad over-heard some customers saying that the product was assembled in Beijing at a nearby factory. So instead of paying retail price at the department store, we ended up going to the factory and got a much better deal.
North America:
1. Dad/mom have lived with us on and off for more than a year (1991, 1999).
I treasure those memories, sharing daily routines, visiting places, taking pictures, learning family histories etc.
2. Dad would always remember our birthdays, sending cards or gifts.
3. Dad has blood type B, very passionate about life, loves family.
He insisted on going to Disney when he was almost 80 years old.
Let me assure you there weren't a whole lot of 80yr olds in the park. But he obviously enjoyed it.
4. On their 50th wedding anniversary, we took them to a cruise trip to the Caribbean.
We always thought we would do it again sometimes with more family members, because Dad was having such a good time during the trip……
Goodbye:
Kids and grand kids all turn out to be OK. 您就放心走吧。一路多保重!
